"Phonics" is the word every parent hears and few have had explained. In one sentence: phonics is the code that connects the sounds of spoken English to the letters that spell them — and teaching it well is the single most reliable thing we know how to do to help a child learn to read. This guide covers what phonics actually is, how it's taught well, one rule that quietly makes or breaks it, and the myths worth putting to rest.
English writing is an alphabetic code: letters stand for the sounds of speech. Phonics teaches that code so a child can do two opposite things with it:
They're two sides of one coin. Reading is blending the code; spelling is segmenting it. Good phonics teaches both together, because each strengthens the other.

The key idea that trips parents up: a word's sounds and its letters are not the same count. "Ship" has four letters but three sounds. Children read by mapping sounds to spellings, not letter by letter — which is why phonics is taught in sounds, not alphabet names.
You'll see the phrase Systematic Synthetic Phonics (SSP) — now the recommended approach across Australian and UK guidance. Two words to unpack:
The evidence, in one line: explicit, systematic synthetic phonics — taught to all beginners in a deliberate sequence — produces stronger, more even reading outcomes than incidental or "when-needed" phonics, and far stronger than guessing-based approaches.
Before letters make sense, a child has to be able to hear the separate sounds in a spoken word. This is phonemic awareness — a purely oral skill: hearing that "map" is /m/ /a/ /p/, that "sun" and "sit" start the same, that swapping /c/ in "cat" for /h/ gives "hat". It's done with your ears and mouth, in the car or the bath, with no book in sight.
Phonemic awareness is the soil phonics grows in: a child who can hear the three sounds in "sun" is ready to learn the three letters that spell them. A child who can't will struggle with blending no matter how many letters they know — which is the most common reason a child "knows their sounds but can't read words" (much more in our guide to CVC words and blending).
English has around 44 sounds spelled by roughly 250 letter combinations — so the code is taught in layers, simplest first:

Here is a mistake almost every well-meaning adult makes, and it quietly sabotages blending. When we say a consonant sound, we tend to add a little "uh" on the end: "buh", "cuh", "duh". That extra vowel is called the schwa. Now watch what it does to a simple word: sound out "cat" as "cuh–a–tuh" and blend it, and you get "cuh-a-tuh" — not "cat". The added vowels jam the blend.
Taught well, consonant sounds are clipped: a short, pure "/c/" (not "cuh"), "/t/" (not "tuh"). Clipped sounds slide together cleanly — /c/ /a/ /t/ → "cat". It sounds like a tiny detail. It is the difference between a child who can blend and one who can't quite work out why the sounds won't join up.

Those sounds aren't a robotic text-to-speech guess at a phoneme; they're built from real recorded human voices and joined so the blend sounds natural. For longer words it drops to the syllable grain instead (but–ter–fly), pitched to your child's reading stage. It's the anti-schwa rule, applied automatically, every time.
Phonics teaching is only as good as the practice that follows it. Decodable books are written so a child can actually sound out almost every word using the code they've been taught so far — so success comes from decoding, not guessing. They're different from the "levelled" or predictable books many of us grew up with, which invite guessing from pictures and repeated sentence patterns. The opposite, usually. What kills the love of reading is struggling — staring at words you can't unlock. Phonics is what makes reading possible; the love grows from great books read aloud and, soon, read for themselves. Do both.
English is deep, not lawless. The large majority of words are decodable with taught patterns, and even "tricky" words are mostly regular apart from one part. Phonics gives a child a strategy for the many; targeted teaching handles the few.
Only a small number are genuinely irregular. And even "memorised" words become instant through decoding practice, not flashcard drilling — the brain files them by their sound-to-spelling links (this is orthographic mapping).
Being read to is priceless — but it builds vocabulary and love of story, not the code. The code has to be taught. (Why, in how children learn to read.)
