One-to-one reading practice — with the books you already own.

bucoo is a patient reading coach for the books already on your shelf. It listens as your child reads one aloud, highlights each word like karaoke, and helps them sound out the hard ones — giving every child the one-to-one reading practice no parent can give every single night.

Why it matters

Reading is a skill that has to be taught — and the early window is everything.

Speech comes naturally; reading does not. Learning to read is a decoding skill — turning letters into sounds and blending them into words — and children learn it best by reading aloud, a little every day, to a patient adult who helps at just the right moment. Yet too many children never get enough of that practice.

~2 in 3of U.S. fourth-graders scored below "proficient" in reading (NAEP, 2022).
more likely to leave school without a diploma if a child isn't reading proficiently by the end of third grade (Hernandez, Annie E. Casey Foundation, 2011).
2 sigmahow much better children learn with one-to-one tutoring versus a classroom — Bloom's "2 sigma problem" (Bloom, 1984).
The gap compounds. Confident readers read more and pull ahead; struggling readers read less and fall further behind — the "Matthew effect" in reading (Stanovich, 1986). Catching it early, with daily practice, is what changes the story.

The proven fix is beautifully simple: a child reading aloud to someone patient, every day. The catch is just as simple — no parent can be that tutor at the end of every long day, and a child who reads to a busy adult often gets the answer handed to them instead of the chance to work it out.

The principle

We teach your child to decode — not guess.

bucoo helps your child turn letters into sounds and blend them into words. It never asks them to guess from the picture or from "what would make sense." Guessing feels quick, but it doesn't transfer to the next new word — decoding works on every word, forever. So when the pictures disappear, your child keeps reading. This is systematic synthetic phonics, the science-of-reading approach, taught along a simple four-step roadmap.

1 Sound Awareness Hear & play with sounds: rhyme, syllables, phonemes s a t 2 Systematic Phonics Letters make sounds: s→/s/ a→/a/ t→/t/ 3 Decode & Blend Blend sounds into words: c-a-t → cat, toward automatic 4 Read Decodable + Real Books child decodes; adult reads aloud Cumulative — but not a strict queue: oral language & comprehension run right through.

How bucoo helps

A patient tutor for your child — on the books already on your shelf.

Point a phone, tablet or laptop camera at any real book. bucoo reads the page, listens as your child reads it aloud, and coaches like a good tutor — never too helpful.

📖

Your child's own books

No walled-garden library to buy into. A camera reads the printed page, so bucoo works with the picture books and readers you already own.

🎤

Karaoke word highlighting

Each word lights up in time as your child reads aloud, keeping them anchored to the line and building fluency.

🪜

Least-to-most "sound it out"

When your child gets stuck, bucoo waits first so they can try — then offers the first sound, then the syllable, and only models the whole word as a last resort.

🎚️

Help pitched to your reader

A Reading Stage ladder tunes the grain of help — letter-sounds for a Fledgling, syllables for a Flyer — with real child-voice audio for each sound.

🛠️

Parents in control

You choose the voice, how helpful the coach is, and screen-time limits — and a progress dashboard shows how your reader is growing.

Private by design

Camera and microphone only switch on after you consent. Processing is on-device where possible, with no ads and no selling of family data.

Productive struggle

It encourages your child to try the word first.

The magic isn't reading the word for your child — it's the moment they get it themselves. bucoo climbs a gentle, least-to-most ladder, giving only as much help as each word needs, and resets the instant your child succeeds.

1
Wait

A short pause first — many stumbles self-correct, and bucoo lets them.

2
Sound it out

The first letter-sound, in place on the page: /b/…

3
Syllable

As decoding matures, the tricky part: but·ter·fly.

4
Model & celebrate

Only if needed, bucoo says the word, your child repeats it, and the win is marked.

Safe by design. When and how bucoo helps is decided by a fixed, deterministic policy grounded in reading pedagogy — never an AI improvising with your child. A language model may help phrase encouragement, but it never decides whether your child read a word correctly.
